Travel report

Australia, 2018

by Leo Jed

Local hosts Paul and Kate Gubesch developed and guided CCE's Australia cycling and cultural exchange program in October. Seven wonderful Australian cyclists accompanied 25 international participants hailing from Canada, China, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey and the USA.

We started at the Gold Coast just south of Brisbane and cycled along Australia's eastern coast to Sydney, overnighting in 14 cities over the course of 16 days. Afterwards, a smaller group spent five more days visiting the capital city of Canberra.

Our delightful Australian hosts generously shared much of their history, culture and lifestyles, and the entire group participated in a lively exchange of cultures and stories. In addition to visiting impressive museums and cultural sites, we thoroughly enjoyed Australia's scenic eastern coast, dotted with beautiful beaches, many of which are world renowned.

Of course we saw kangaroos, many bird species, other wildlife and stunning flora. In spite of almost continuous rain (!), everybody enjoyed this experience and were very grateful for the time and expertise our Australian hosts spent planning and guiding this very worthwhile program.

At program's end, some individuals were able to continue their travels to Melbourne and other Australian cities, as well as New Caledonia and New Zealand.

Thank you Paul and Kate!
